The diaphragm is the primary muscle responsible for the maintenance of thoracic cavity and controls the intrathoracic pressure. The inspiration and expiration process involves the rhythmic movement of the diaphragm. These movements alter the pressure within the thoracic cage and help in respiration. This brings a change in the rates of inspiration and expiration.
