Chapter 1.3, Problem 27E
Secondhand smoke: A recent study compared the heart rates of 19 infants born to nonsmoking mothers with those of 17 infants born to mothers who smoked an average of 15 cigarettes a day while pregnant and after giving birth. The heart rates of the infants at one year of age were 20% slower on the average for the smoking mothers.
- What is the outcome variable?
- What is the treatment variable?
- Was this a cohort study or a case-control study?
- Was the study prospective, cross-sectional, or retrospective?
- Could the results be due to confounding? Explain.

Passive exposure to environmental tobacco smoke has been associated with growth suppression and
an increased frequency of respiratory tract infections in normal children. Is this association more
pronounced in children with cystic fibrosis? To answer this question, 43 children (18 girls and 25
boys) attending a 2-week summer camp for cystic fibrosis patients were studied (New England Journal
of Medicine, Sept. 20, 1990). Among several variables measured were the child's weight percentile
(y) and the number of cigarettes smoked per day in the child's home (x).

Callahan (2009) conducted a study to evaluate the effectiveness of physical exercise programs for individuals with chronic arthritis. Participants with doctor-diagnosed arthritis either received a Tai Chi course immediately or were placed in a control group to begin the course 8 weeks later. At the end of the 8-week period, self-reports of pain were obtained for both groups. Data similar to the results obtained in the study are shown in the following table.

Give two examples.arrow_forwardBinge-watching a television show might not be the best way to enjoy a television series (Horvath et al., 2017). Participants in an experiment were in a group that either watched an entire t.v. series during daily one-hour sessions or watched all the episodes during a single binge session. Participants were asked to rate their enjoyment of the t.v. series on a scale of 0-100. Data like those observed by the author are listed below. - introduces a study investigating whether a brief diet intervention might improve depression symptoms. In the study, 75 college-age students with elevated depression symptoms and relatively poor diet habits were randomly assigned to either a healthy diet group or a control group. Depression levels were measured at the beginning of the experiment and then again three weeks later. The response variable is the reduction in depression level (as measured by the DASS survey) at the end of the three weeks. Larger numbers mean more improvement in depression symptoms. Test whether these experimental results allow us to conclude that, on average, improvement of depression symptoms is higher for those who eat a healthy diet for three weeks than for those who don't. The data is available on StatKey and in DietDepression. Let Group 1 represent those with a healthy diet and Group 2 represent those with no diet change. State the null and alternative hypotheses.arrow_forwardWhat statistical tool should I use for this problem? A graduating nursing student conducted a research regarding the effect of taking oral contraceptives to the blood pressure among women. She selected 40 women in her study who have not taken any contraceptives yet and 40 women who have taken contraceptives for a month, and then took their blood pressure. She analyzed the data and wanted to find out whether the blood pressure of women who took contraceptives significantly differs than those who don’t take any.arrow_forwardWhat type of study is this?
