Chapter 13, Problem 1BS.1QC
Summary Introduction

To determine:

The effect of epigenetics on transcription and translation.

Introduction:

Epigenetics refers to heritable changes in the functions of genes without making any change in the nucleotide sequence of the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). Epigenetics describe chromosomal changes that affect gene expression and gene activity. These may be a result of environmental or external factors or can be a part of developmental program of the body.

Explanation of Solution

Epigenetic tags can affect gene expression differently. During DNA methylation, methyl groups are attached to cytosine nucleotides in the DNA. This prevents the process of transcription from taking place. If transcription will not take place, there is no chance of translation to take place. The methyl group that is attached to the cytosine causes gene silencing and thus, interferes with transcription. Sometimes, epigenetic tags can also remove methyl groups and cause over expression of the genes.

Conclusion

Epigenetics can either cause over expression of gene or halt gene expression at all by interfering with transcription and translation.
