CP Exploring Europa. There is strong evidence that Europa, a satellite of Jupiter, has a liquid ocean beneath its icy surface. Many scientists think we should land a vehicle there to search for life. Before launching it, we would want to test such a lander under the gravity conditions at the surface of Europa. One way to do this is to put the lander at the end of a rotating arm in an orbiting earth satellite. If the arm is 4.25 m long and pivots about one end, at what angular speed (in rpm) should it spin so that the acceleration of the lander is the same as the acceleration due to gravity at the surface of Europa? The mass of Europa is 14.80 × 1022 kg and its diameter is 3120 km.

Planetesimals in the outer primordial solar system 4.5 billion years ago coalesced into Neptune over hundreds of millions of years. - 1: Calculate the escape velocity of a body from the surface of a planet. (Radius of the planet = 1100 km, acceleration due to gravity on the surface of the planet = 1.6 m/s²).arrow_forwardA number of gas giant planets orbiting other stars at distances less than 1 A.U. have been discovered. Because of their proximity to their parent stars, and their compositional similarity to Jupiter, they have been labeled “Hot Jupiters”. The orbital radius of one of these planets is 0.06 A.U. with average orbital speed 600 km/sec. What is the length of this planet’s year in Earth (solar) days? Estimate the mass, M, of its parent star in terms of the mass of the sun (M) using Newton’s first form of Kepler’s 3rd Law. Calculate the star’s luminosity, L, in terms of the luminosity of the sun (L☉), Note: (LL=MM4where L ~ 4 × 1026 W ). The radius of this planet is 1.5 times the radius of Jupiter. Assuming its equilibrium temperature is the temperature at which the planet radiates as much energy as it receives from its star, estimate the temperature of the planet. The value of the planet’s albedo is 0.8. This time Rick plans to study Pluto's largest moon Charon. Charon has a mass of 1.586 ×1021 kg and a mean radius of 606 km, and might have a nitrogenous atmosphere (N2) just like Pluto. If, for a massive object to have an atmosphere its escape speed must be 12 times greater than the root-mean- square (rms) velocity of the gas (otherwise the gas will slowly leak away over time), what is the maximum temperature that Charon can have and still have a nitrogenous atmosphere?
