Chapter 13, Problem 13.31P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Partial pressure of H2 and N2 has to be calculated.

Concept Introduction:

The net pressure for gaseous mixture is equal to the algebraic sum of partial pressures of its constituent gases. This is referred to as Dalton’s law.

For a mixture of two gases, 1 and 2, Ptotal is calculated as follows:

  Ptotal=P1+P2

In terms of mole fraction the partial pressure is calculated as follows:

  Pi=xiPtotal

Here,

Ptotal denotes total pressure exerted by whole mixture of gases.

xi denotes the mole fraction.

Pi represents the partial pressure.

Answer to Problem 13.31P

The partial pressure of H2 is 0.61187 atm and N2 is 1.3818 atm.

Explanation of Solution

The formula to convert mass in grams to moles is as follows:

  Number of moles=Given massmolar mass        (1)

Substitute 0.513 g for mass and 2.0158 g/mol for molar mass of H2 in equation (1) to calculate the moles of H2.

  Number of moles=0.513 g2.0158 g/mol=0.254489 mol

Substitute 16.1 g for mass and 28.0134 g/mol for molar mass of N2 to calculate the moles of N2 in equation (1).

  Number of moles=16.1 g28.0134 g/mol=0.57473 mol

The formula to calculate mole fraction is as follows:

  xH2=nH2nN2+nH2        (2)

Here,

nH2 denotes the number of moles of H2.

nN2 denotes the number of moles of N2.

xH2 denotes the mole fraction of H2.

Substitute 0.254489 mol for nH2, 0.57473 mol for nN2 in equation (2).

  xH2=0.254489 mol0.254489 mol+0.57473 mol=0.30690

The total number of moles in mixture is calculated as follows:

  ntotal=nH2+nN2        (3)

Substitute 0.254489 mol for nH2, 0.57473 mol for nN2 in equation (3).

  ntotal=0.254489 mol+0.57473 mol=0.829219 mol

The formula to convert Celsius to kelvin is as follows:

  T(K)=T(°C)+273 K        (4)

Substitute 20 °C for T(°C) in equation (4).

  T(K)=20 °C+273 K=293 K

The expression to calculate pressure as per the ideal gas equation is as follows:

  P=nRTV        (5)

Substitute 293 K for T, 10 L for V, 0.829219 mol for n, and 0.08206 Latm/molK for R in equation (5) to calculate total pressure.

  P=(0.829219 mol)(0.08206 Latm/molK)(293 K)(10 L)=1.9937 atm

In terms of mole fraction the partial pressure is calculated as follows:

  PH2=xH2Ptotal        (6)

Here,

Ptotal denotes total pressure exerted by the whole mixture of gases.

xH2 denotes the mole fraction of H2.

PH2 denotes the partial pressure exerted by H2.

Substitute 0.30690 for xH2 and 1.9937 atm for Ptotal in equation (6).

  PH2=(0.30690)(1.9937 atm)=0.61187 atm

The relation of mole fraction that is true is given as follows:

  xN2=1xH2        (7)

Substitute 0.30690 for xH2 in equation (7).

  xN2=1xH2=10.30690=0.6931

In terms of mole fraction the partial pressure is calculated as follows:

  PN2=xN2Ptotal        (8)

Here,

Ptotal denotes total pressure exerted by the whole mixture of gases.

xN2 denotes the mole fraction of N2.

PN2 denotes the partial pressure exerted by N2.

Substitute 0.6931 for xN2 and 1.9937 atm for Ptotal in equation (8).

  PN2=(0.6931)(1.9937 atm)=1.3818 atm
