Interpretation: The following problem can be comprehended by the concept of osmotic pressure.
Concept introduction: The process of osmosis occurs from the tendency of the pure solvent to pass through the semipermeable membrane, into a solution having a solute to which the semipermeable membrane is impervious. Osmotic pressure is minimum pressure required to be applied to a solution to avert the inflow of pure solvent through a semipermeable membrane. The osmosis procedure is of great significance in the physiology of biological cell since the cell membrane is semipermeable in nature.
Given: Here, we are given a albumin solution of 0.1% m/v strength which is separated from another albumin solution of 2% m/v strength by a semipermeable membrane. We are asked to find which compartment will have the higher osmotic pressure and in which direction will the water flow initially. We also need to find in which compartment the volume level will rise.
