CAN PROJECT
Metal comes in large, flat sheets. If we ignore waste metal in the manufacturing process, then then to minimize
metal we minimize surface area, like on Wednesday. In that case, we got that h = 2r is best. But cans aren't like
that!
Problem 1. The material for cans is cut from sheets of metal. The cylinder's sides are formed by bending rectangles;
these rectangles are cut from the sheet with little or no waste. But if the top and bottom are cut from squares with
side length 2r, like in the picture, there's waste metal. When the circles are cut like this, minimize the total metal
used to make a can containing 1L.
3. Find the right triangle of largest area inscribed under the parabola y = 4 – r² with its base along
the x axis (as shown).

- A rectangular solid has length L=12.6 mm, width W=23.8 mm, and height H=32.5 mm. Find the length of a diagonal AB from the upper left rear vertex to the lower right front vertex. Round the answer to 1 decimal place.arrow_forward2. Suppose you revolved the triangular region bound by the axes and the line 4x + 3y 12 completely around the x-axis to sweep out a solid of revolution. Describe the solid and then find its surface area. Leave your answer exact.arrow_forward4. The flag of Greenland is shown below: 1 It is an 18 x 12 rectangle; if placed a coordinate plane with bottom left corner at (0,0) and top right corner at (18, 12), it is divided in half by a line at y = 6 and has a circle of radius 4 centered at (7,6). The top half of the flag is white and the bottom half is red; within the circle, the two colors are swapped. Suppose that a point on this flag is chosen uniformly at random. (a) Find the probability that the chosen point is red. (b) Find the probability that the chosen point is red or inside the circle. (As usual, "or" in mathematics includes the possibility that both things happen.)arrow_forward
