Introduction:
Hematopoiesis is the process of the formation of the cellular components of blood from the hematopoietic stem cells of the bone marrow. Megakaryocytes are one of the important derivatives of the hematopoietic stem cells of the bone marrow. They are responsible for the production of the platelets involved in blood clotting.
Megakaryocytes are the largest and the rarest cells of the bone marrow. On complete differentiation and maturation into a megakaryocyte, its cytoplasm buds off to produce a large number of platelets. The hormone, thrombopoietin produced by the liver and the kidney regulates the platelet production.
