You‘re designing a vacation cabin at a ski resort. The cabin has a cathedral ceiling as shown in Fig. 12.37, and you estimate that each roof rafter needs to support up to 170 kg of snow and building materials. The horizontal tie beam near the roof peak can withstand a 7.5-kN force. You can neglect any horizontal force from the vertical walls, and treat contact forces as concentrated at the roof peak and the outside edge of the rafter/wall junctions. Will the tie beam hold? Will it be in tension or compression?

- In Example 14.3, we found that one of the steel cables supporting an airplane at the Udvar-Hazy Center was under a tension of 9.30 103 N. Assume the cable has a diameter of 2.30 era and an initial length of 8.00 m before the plane is suspended on the cable. How much longer is the cable when the plane is suspended on it?arrow_forwardA steel cube of side length L = 0.5 m is subjected to a shearing force of 5000 N along the top surface. Given the shear constant for steel as 8.3 x 1010 N/m2, compute the shear angle.arrow_forward1 b F2 1 1 FR F1 b. The figure above shows a crane tower on site at the HWY 1 expansion and Stoney Trail extension in NW Calgary. You are a design engineer working for the company supplying cranes for the contractors and you have been asked to evaluate the tower design. The crane tower supporting the pulley is designed so that the resultant force from the cable tension running over the pulley is oriented along the tower axis. Note: The tension in the cable is the same on both sides so ||Fill = ||F2l|| = T.arrow_forward
- A 12-mm square steel bearing plate lies between an 8-mm diameter wooden post and a concrete footing as shown in Fig. Determine the maximum value of the load P if the stress in wood is limited to 1800 kN/m2 and that in concrete to 650 kN/m2 .arrow_forwardThe steel swivel bushing in the elevator control of an airplane is held in place using a nut and washer as shown in Fig. (a). Failure of the washer A can cause the pushrod to separate as shown in Fig. (b). If the maximum average shear stress is tmax = 21 ksi, determine the force F that must be applied to the bushing. The washer is 1 16 in. thick.arrow_forwardÁ brass wire (Y = 10" N/m²) and a steel %3D wire (Y = 2 x 10" N/m²) of equal length and diameter are suspended from a common rigid support. The free ends A of brass and B of steel at a distance of 75 cm are connected by a %3D horizontal bar, with both the wires vertical and parallel. Calculate the distance of a point from B, at which a load may be attached so that the bar remains horizontal. 75cm (75-x) P,arrow_forward
- Under certain loading conditions, can a Truss ever include a two-force member that experiences zero force? Yes or No?arrow_forwardA tunnel of length L = 140 m, height H = 8.4 m, and width 5.8 m (with a flat roof) is to be constructed at distance d = 49 m beneath the ground. (See the figure.) The tunnel roof is to be supported entirely by square steel columns, each with a cross-sectional area of 1080 cm². The mass of 1.0 cm³ of the ground material is 3.5 g. (a) What is the total weight of the ground material the columns must support? (b) How many columns are needed to keep the compressive stress on each column at one-half its ultimate strength? - An angler hangs a 4.50 kg fish from a vertical steel wire 1.50 m long and 5.00 * 10-3 cm2 in cross-sectional area. The upper end of the wire is securely fastened to a support. (a) Calculate the amount the wire is stretched by the hanging fish. The angler now applies a varying force F at the lower end of the wire, pulling it very slowly downward by 0.500 mm from its equilibrium position. For this downward motion, calculate (b) the work done by gravity; (c) the work done by the force F S ; (d) the work done by the force the wire exerts on the fish; and (e) the change in the elastic potential energy (the potential energy associated with the tensile stress in the wire). Compare the answers in parts (d) and (e).arrow_forwardNeed to do correctly.arrow_forwardA 242-N object is hung from the end of a wire of cross-sectional area 0.01 cm2.
