Concept explainers
To chose correct sampling method for each of the scenario.
Answer to Problem 23PT4
(b) Voluntary response, SRS, stratified, cluster
Explanation of Solution
Given:
I) A student chooses for a survey the first 20 students to arrive at school.
II) The name of each student in a school is written on a card, the cards are well mixed, and 10 names are drawn.
III) A state agency randomly selects 50 people from each of the state's senatorial districts.
IV) A city council randomly selects eight city blocks and then surveys all the voting-age residents of those blocks.
First need to know about sampling methods:
Simple random sampling: It uses a
Stratified sampling: It draws simple random samples from independent subgroups.
Systematic sampling: It is letting every kth individual be in the sample.
Cluster sampling: It divides the population into non-overlapping subgroups and some of these subgroups are then in the sample.
Convenience sampling/Voluntary response: It uses a subgroup from the population, that is conveniently chosen.
Now we will check it for each of the scenario.
I) It uses Voluntary response, because the first 20 students are conveniently chosen.
II) It uses SRS, because there is equal chance to chose each of the name.
III) It uses Stratified random sampling, because there are independent subgroups which are states.
IV) It uses Cluster sampling, because the subgroups are eight city blocks.
Hence, the correct sequence given in b)
