Chapter 1.2, Problem 1EIQ
Summary Introduction

Introduction:

Neuronal messages are due to resting potential differences, carried across the neuron. The whole neuron is covered by a bi-layered, phospholipid membrane, about 8 nanometers thick. Cylindrical protein molecules are embedded between the phospholipids, which allow certain chemicals to pass. During rest, owing to the selective permeability of ions, the membrane pumps, three sodium ions out of the cell, for two potassium ions taken inside. This causes the accumulation of sodium ions outside the cell, and potassium ions accumulation inside.
