Introduction:

An action potential is the message propagated by a neuron during the depolarization phase. The intensity of stimulus does not alter the amplitude or velocity of the action potential. The thicker the axon, the faster the propagation of impulse, which indicates that the increase in diameter of the axon increases the conduction velocity. Myelin sheath is an insulating material made of fats and proteins, developed by vertebrates to increase the speed of conduction of impulse.
