Concept explainers
To explain four-step statistical problem-solving process.
Explanation of Solution
Given:
I) The question of interest: Whether or not the supermarkets tended to put sugary kid’s cereals on lower shelves so that these kids could see.
II) Data collection: The researcher collected data on 77 brands of cereal at a local supermarket. Therefore, for each brand, the amount of sugar (grams per serving), calories per serving, and the shelf in the store on which the cereal was found were recorded.
III) Data analysis: In this part, the average of sugar content of each shelf was calculated and recorded in the table.
Shelf | Sugar content |
1 | 5.71 |
2 | 9.62 |
3 | 6.53 |
This sugar content is recorded in grams per serving.
IV) Result: The data do not support this claim, as the lowest shelf actually seems to have lowest sugar content.
