To calculate the formal charge on the carbene C.
Concept introduction:
A species which contains a carbon atom that has a lone pair of electrons and two bonds is termed as a carbene. Having three total electron groups, that C atom lacks an octet and is sp2 hybridized: the lone pair of electrons occupies a hybrid orbital, leaving the p orbital empty. Thus, these carbenes resemble carbocations and are generally highly electron poor.
