Glucose enters the cell from the bloodstream through a glucose transporter protein in the cell membrane. Inside the cell, glycolysis occurs in the cytosol when the six-carbon glucose is broken down into three-carbon molecules of pyruvate and two adenosine triphosphate (ATP) molecule.
