Chapter 11.2, Problem 3P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The organometallic compound formed by excess reaction of methylmagnesium chloride with GaCl3.

Concept introduction:

  • Organometallic compound it can be defined as the compound which contain Carbon – Metal bond.
  • The carbon attached to the halogen in an alkyl halide is an electrophile, whereas the carbon attached to the metal in an organometallic compound is a nucleophile.
  • Transmetallation:

Transmetallation occurs when an organometallic compound is added to a metal halid whose metal is more electronegative (closer to the electronegative of carbon) than the metal in the organometallic compound.

  • Grignard reagent:

The compound that results when magnesium is inserted between the carbon atom and the halogen of an alkyl halide like RMgBr & RMgCl  is known as Grignard reagent.  They are also known as Organomagnesium compounds.
