Concept explainers
Interpretation:
Assessment of the role of kinetic molecular theory of gases in explaining the physical properties of gases.
Concept introduction:
The kinetic molecular theory explains the gases as large amount of small particles (atoms/molecules), which move constantly and rapidly. These particles randomly collide with each other and with the walls of the containers. Kinetic molecular theory of gases describes the properties of gases like temperature, pressure, volume, thermal conductivity, viscosity etc.
To discuss:
The role of kinetic molecular theory of gases in explaining the physical properties of gases.
(a)
To describe:
Gases moves faster at higher temperature.
The kinetic energy of the gas particles is directly proportional to temperature of the gas. That’s why, gases moves faster at higher temperature.
(b)
To describe:
Can gases be compressed much more than liquids or solids?
Gases can be compressed much more than liquids or solids. As per the kinetic theory of gases, volume of the gas is minimal when compared with the volume of the container.
(c)
To describe:
Gases have low density because the particles of gas are at a very large from each other at any given moment.
