Cyanobacteria acquire their energy by means of photosynthesis. It is the only photosynthetic prokaryote that have the capability to yield oxygen. The name “cyanobacteria” was derived from the color (cyan) of the bacteria. It is commonly present in fresh water lakes, oceans, damp soil, streams, and so on.
