Introduction:

Signaling molecules are chemical substances such as hormones, neurotransmitters, and cytokines, which bind to specific receptors. The receptors are sites to which the ligand or signaling molecule binds. These receptors can be present on the plasma membrane (extracellular receptors) or they may be present within the plasma membrane (intracellular).
