A researcher wants to study how daily protein supplementation in the elderly population will affect baseline liver fat. The study budget will allow the enrollment of 62 patients. Half will be randomized to a placebo group and half to the protein supplement treatment group, and the trial will be carried out over one month. It is desired to see whether the mean change in the percentage of liver fat from baseline to the end of the study differs between the two groups in the study. The researcher needs to know what power can be obtained under the sample size restrictions to identify a change in the mean percent liver fat of 10. Based on results observed in past similar studies, a common standard deviation of 12 will be used for each treatment group in the power analysis. Assume that the significance level is 0.05.
For the situation described below, (1) list the threat to statistical conclusion validity that is present due to the researcher’s actions (low power or high Type 1 error rate) and (2) state why the threat exists.
A researcher had difficulty keeping participants in his 2 year longitudinal study. The number of participants at the end of the study was 25 percent lower than the number at the beginning of the study.

You find that the mean oxygen level is 92 and the 95% confidence interval (CI) is (85-98). - You are reading an article detailing a study designed to compare the average body massindex among hypertensive individuals (persons with high blood pressure) tonormotensive individuals. The study was conducted using participants in a health planoffered by a large insurance carrier. 200 randomly selected hypertensive participantswere compared to 200 randomly selected normotensive participants. The study reports a95% confidence interval (CI) for the mean difference in BMI between hypertensives andnormotensives. The 95% CI is (0.15 kg/m2, 2.43 kg/m2). However, no p-value isreported for testing the null hypothesis of no mean difference in BMI between the twogroups (a mean difference of 0 kg/mg2) versus the alternative of a non-zero meandifference. Luckily, you have taken this course, so you are able to determine:a. the p-value is < .05b. the p-value is > .05c. the p-value is exactly .05.d. the p-value is exactly .009e. None of the above.arrow_forwardA researcher conducted a research that majority of people who died during pandemic bought a new phone during last year. What type of research is this? If his assumption is correct which statistical test should be appropriate to analyze the data?arrow_forwardInvestigators wished to study whether pregnant women over the age of 42 were more likely to suffer from postnatal depression than the general population. The mean Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale rating for the population is estimated to be about 21. The 121 women over the age of 42 in the study reported a mean EPDS score of 23 (SD=1.7). You are interested in investigating if there a significant difference between the women in the study and the general population. What kind of sample and outcome is this?arrow_forward
- Qualitative researchers should view the opinions of other researchers about the themes derived from data analysis as biased. This is because other researchers would not be as familiar with the results as the researcher. True False A researcher has conducted a crosstabs analysis to understand the distribution of income across 3 different gender groups (male, female and non-binary). They notes that the Chi-square test produced an asymptotic significance level of 0.027. What does this suggest? (pick the most appropriate interpretation) Income does not vary across different genders Income does not differ across the different grouops There are significant differences in the distribution of income for the male, female and non-binary groups The male group has sufficiently more income compared to the female and non-binary groupsarrow_forwardWhen a regression coefficient is significant at the .05 level, it means that there is only a five percent chance that there will be an error in a forecast. there is 95 percent chance that the regression coefficient is the true population coefficient. there is a five percent chance or less that the estimated coefficient is zero. there is a five percent chance or less that the regression coefficient is not the true population coefficient.arrow_forwardA psychologist hypothesizes that the children with type-A personality score higher than the children with type-B personality on a memory test. The estimated standard error turned out to be 1.2, while the mean score of type-B children was 22.2 and the mean score for type-A children was 25.6. What is the t score?arrow_forward
- How would I want to describe this data study graphically and numerically? What kind of statistical test/method would I want to use and why? A study was performed to determine whether steroids were effective in slowing the development of Crohn’s disease (CD). In the study, 338 patients with irritable bowel syndrome (a possible precursor to CD) were randomly assigned to either receive steroids immediately or to wait until they developed further CD symptoms. Data were collected a year after randomization. In addition to evaluating whether CD developed, data on race, blood tests measurements (continuous), and the number of visits to the doctor in the last year were also collected.arrow_forward2. A study investigated 62 students who were randomly assigned into two equal size groups. Group A could listen to music as they studied for a big test, while group B was not allowed to listen to music. After the exam, they calculated a 95% confidence interval for the mean difference in scores between groups, which was (-1.2, 3.4). Explain what one can conclude from this confidence interval.
