Given information:

The unit weight γ of the soil is 19kN/m3.

The cohesion c is 10kN/m2.

The soil friction angle ϕis 26°.

The depth Df of footing is 1 m.

The dead load is 600 kN/m.

The live load is 400 kN/m.

The factor of safety is 3.

Calculation:

Refer Table 6.1, “Terzaghi’s bearing capacity factors” in the text book.

For ϕ=26°:

Take the value of Nc as 27.09.

Take the value of Nq as 14.21.

Take the value of Nγ as 9.84.

Determine the ultimate bearing capacity of the foundation qu using the formula;

qu=cNc+qNq+12γBNγ=cNccuNcFcsFcd+γ×DfNq+12γBNγ=10×27.09+19×1×14.21+12×19×B×9.84=93.84B+540.89kN/m2

Determine the allowable bearing capacity of the foundation qall using the formula;

qall=quFS=93.84B+540.89kN/m23=31.2B+180.3kN/m2

Find the design load.

Design load=Deadload+Liveload=600+400=1,000kN/m

Find the required width for the foundation:

Design loadBqall1,000kN/mB31.2B+180.3kN/m231.2B2+180.3B1,0000B3.5m

Hence, the required width for the foundation is 3.5m¯.
