Chapter 11, Problem 10CQ

The outward force on one end of an air tank was calculated in Example 11.2. How is this force balanced? (The tank does not accelerate, so the force must be balanced.)

Two identical balloons of the same volume are pumped up with air to more than atmospheric pressure and suspended on the ends of a stick that is horizontally balanced. One of the balloons is then punctured. Is the balance of the stick upset? If so, which way does it tip?
You have been warned to  set up a ladder with its base about 1/4 of its length from the wall.   However, since there are some things stored next to the wall you decide to ignore the advice and  set the base of the ladder out half its length from the wall instead.   The ladder is sitting on slippery old snow but It still  feels safe when you start up to clear your gutters after a week of storms. After you climb on you have added your weight to the ladder.   Which of these is a likely result?       You go about halfway up, the bottom starts to slip away from the wall as you lean forward to hold on, the ladder rotates faster and falls down completely.     You go up one rung and the base slips away from the wall.       Nothing happens.  It cannot slip once you are on it because your weight  increases the friction.     It slips a little when you first get on, so a friend adds weight to the base.  Once you are near the top it is very stable and cannot slip.
RALK NERT F Chapter 11, Problem 069 A Venturi meter is a device for measuring the speed of a uid within a pipe. The drawing shows a gas lowing at speed vy through a hortrontal section of pipe whose cross-sectionel arma is A 0.0602 m. The gas has a density of p- 1.30 kg/m. The Venturt meter has a cross-sectional area of A0.0169 m and has been substituted for a section of the larger pipe. The pres difference between the two sections is P- P-68.7 Pa. Pind (a) the speed vy of the gas in the larger original pipe and (b) the volume flow rate Q of the ges.
