Chapter 10, Problem 9CR
Summary Introduction

To review:

The formation of bicarbonate from the dissolved carbon dioxide in the region of metabolizing tissue.

Introduction:

Every living organism needs energy to perform their activity. Energy is produced by the process called metabolism. Hemoglobin of RBC (red blood cells) binds with the oxygen molecule in the lungs and carries it to the cells of the body. Cells use the oxygen and perform the metabolic activity and produce carbon dioxide. Produced carbon dioxide then carries out by blood to the lungs, from where it is excreted out of the body via respiration. Carbon dioxide from the metabolizing tissue is transported in three ways. These are first dissolved in blood plasma, second binding with hemoglobin and lastly in form of bicarbonate.
