To explain: The reason that consumption of a large amount of carbon dioxide by living trees does not make much contribution in the reduction of global warming.
Concept introduction:
The earth’s surface has enormous amount of carbon. It moves through the biosphere in the processes mediated by photosynthetic plants on land and in sea. This is represented as the carbon cycle, which involves two main processes namely photosynthesis and respiration. The photosynthesis process involves fixation of atmospheric carbon in plants to form organic molecules such as sugars required for life processes. Respiration is the process through which carbon is returned to the atmosphere from dead plants in the form of carbon dioxide.

- As CO2 concentrations increase in the atmosphere, biologists continue to explore the role of respiration from plants as a small but potentially important contribution beyond fossil fuel combustion. The data in the Table were collected from the leaf of a sagebrush plant from a semiarid ecosystem in Wyoming, enclosed in a chamber that measures the rate of CO2 exchange. The respiration rate is the amount of CO2 in micromoles lost by the leaf per square meter per second, which results in the negative numbers. The temperature values are from the leaves as they are heated or cooled during the measurements. In your science journal, write a claim that supports the idea that photosynthesis helps sustain life on Earth, and support that claim with at least one piece of evidence. Use the rubric below to assist you with your response. Criteria Scale Makes Claim about Photosynthesis and Supports Claim with Evidence 2 This response includes both a claim about photosynthesis and its importance, and supports the claim with one piece of factual evidence. 1 This response either lacks both a claim and a piece of evidence, or contains a faulty claim or irrelevant/faulty evidence. 0 This response lacks the required components for partial credit.arrow_forwardExplain why this carbon cycle diagram does not have a b arrow that shows carbon atoms going from CO 2 molecules in the air directly to the giraffe.
