Robot Cockroaches Cockroaches tend to rest in groups and prefer dark areas. In a study by Halloy et al. published in Science Magazine in November 2007, cockroaches were introduced to a brightly lit, enclosed area with two different available shelters, one darker than the other. Each time a group of cockroaches was put into the brightly lit area will be called a trial. When groups of 16 real cockroaches were put in a brightly lit area, in 22 out of 30 trials, all the cockroaches went under the same shelter. In the other 8 trials, some of the cock-roaches went under one shelter, and some under the other one.
Another group consisted of a mixture of real cockroaches and robot cockroaches (4 robots and 12 real cockroaches). The robots did not look like cockroaches but had the odor of male cockroaches, and they were programmed to prefer groups (and brighter shelters). There were 30 trials. In 28 of the trials, all the cockroaches and robots rested under the same shelter, and in 2 of the trials they split up.
Is the inclusion of robots associated with whether they all went under the same shelter? To answer the following questions, assume the cockroaches are a random sample of all cockroaches.
a. Use a chi-square test for homogeneity with a significance level of
b. Repeat the question using Fisher’s Exact Test. (If your software will not perform the test for you, search for Fisher’s Exact Test on the Internet to do the calculations.) Conduct a two-sided hypothesis test so that the test is consistent with the test in part a.
c. Compare the
b. Which statistical test do you think is the better procedure in this case? Why?

- People with headaches are randomly divided into two groups. One group gets pain medication, and the other does not. One hour later, the participants are asked about their pain. Is it an experimental study or an observational study?arrow_forwardResearchers at Purdue University and WichitaState University found that airlines are doing a better job of getting passengers totheir destinations on time (Associated Press, April 2, 2012). AirTran Airways andSouthwest Airlines were among the leaders in ontime arrivals with both having 88%of their flights arriving on time. But for the 12% of flights that were delayed, howmany minutes were these flights late? Sample data showing the number of minutesthat delayed flights were late are provided in the sheet named AirDelay. Data areshown for both airlines.(a) Formulate the hypotheses that can be used to test for a difference between thepopulation mean minutes late for delayed flights by these two airlines.(b) What is the sample mean number of minutes late for delayed flights for each ofthese two airlines?(c) Using a 0.05 level of significance, what is the p-value and what is your conclusion?arrow_forwardAmail-order company has two warehouses, one on the West Coast and the second on the East Coast. The company's policy is to mail all orders placed with it within 72 hours. The company's quality control department checks quite often whether or not this policy is maintained at the two warehouses. A recently taken sample of 407 orders placed with the warehouse on the West Coast showed that 366 of them were mailed within 72 hours. Another sample of 297 orders placed with the warehouse on the East Coast showed that 281 of them were mailed within 72 hours. Let p, be the proportion of all orders placed with the warehouse on the West Coast that are mailed within 72 hours, and p, be the proportion of all orders placed with the warehouse on the East Coast that are mailed within 72 hours. a. Construct a 90% confidence interval for the difference between the proportions of all orders placed at the two warehouses that are mailed within 72 hours. Round your answers to two decimal places. to i b.…arrow_forward
- An article noted that chocolate is rich in flavonoids. The article reports that "regular consumption of foods rich in flavonoids may reduce the risk of coronary heartdisease." The study received funding from a candy company and a chocolate manufacturers association. Identify and explain at least one source of bias in the study described. Then suggest how the bias might have been avoided.arrow_forward12)A crossover trial is a type of experiment used to compare two drugs. Subjects take one drug for a period of time, then switch to the other. The responses of the subjects are then compared using matched-pair methods. In an experiment to compare two pain relievers, seven subjects took one pain reliever for two weeks, then switched to the other. They rated their pain level from 1 to 10, with larger numbers representing higher levels of pain. The results are listed below. Can you conclude that the mean pain level is more with drug B? Use the 0.05 level and the P-value method. Subject 1 2 3 5 3 4 5 6 7 2 5 2 6 Drug A 1 1 Drug B 3 7 (c) State the appropriate null and alternate hypotheses. (d) Compute the P-value. e) State a conclusion. 6 5 6 6 (c) Determine whether to reject Null Hypothesis. 13arrow_forwardIn a study about learning styles, researchers used a group of 64 elementary school students who volunteered to be part of the study. The researchers gave each student a pre-test and based upon the results, they divided them into 32 pairs of similarly scoring students. School administrators then randomly assigned one student from each pair to mathematics instruction online while the other student received in-person instruction in a traditional classroom. At the end of the year, all 64 students received a mathematics assessment, measured on a 100-point scale. The researchers calculated the difference (in person −− online) in the mathematics assessment scores for each pair of students. The 32 differences had a mean of 15 and a standard deviation of 3.9 points. Construct and interpret a 95% confidence interval for the mean difference (in person −− online) in the mathematics assessment scores for all pairs of students like these who learn math either face-to-face or online.arrow_forward
