Calculation:

At the temperature of 20°C consider the following properties:

Density of glycerin is (ρgl)=1260kg/m3.

Kinematic viscosity is (vgl)=1.19×103m2/s.

Calculate the Reynold’s number (Re) .

  Re=VDvglRe=V×(40mm×1m1000mm)1.19×103=33.61V

Consider the flow in pipe is laminar.

Calculate the Darcy’s friction factor (f).

  f=64Re=6433.61V=1.904V

Calculate the head loss due to friction (hf).

  hf=fLV22gDhf=(1.904V)×4×V22×9.81×0.04hf=9.704V        (I)

Apply the Bernoulli’s Equation between point A and B. Consider the point B as datum.

  PAγgl+VA22g+ZA=PBγgl+VB22g+ZB+hL0+0+5.5=0+V2×9.81+0+9.704VV=0.564m/s

Thus, the maximum velocity (V) of the glycerin is 0.564m/s_.

Substitute V=0.564m/s in Equation (I) and calculate the head loss over the 4m length.

  hf=9.704V=9.704(0.564m/s)=5.47m

Thus, the head loss over the 4m length is 5.47m_.
