Chapter 10, Problem 1FIB
Summary Introduction

Introduction:

The DNA act as a genetic material which carries information that passes to the next generation. The DNA includes genes and every gene contains a pair of alleles. The DNA present in the nucleus divided into chromosomes (a long strand of DNA).

Answer to Problem 1FIB

Correct answer:

The physical position of a gene on a chromosome is called its locus. Alternative forms of a gene are called alleles. These alternative forms of genes arise as mutations, which are changes in the nucleotide sequence of a gene.

Explanation of Solution

DNA is a long strand structure which is present in form of the chromosome in the nucleus of cells. In DNA many genes are present, which gets translated into specific proteins. The physical position of a gene in the chromosome is called as locus.

Allele is the alternate form of the gene which means the gene has at least two variations. The variation of a gene can be more than two. The allele occupies the same position on the homologous chromosome and often classified as recessive or dominant.

The different alleles present on the chromosomes are inherited from both parents (mother and father). These alleles are arising from mutations. Mutations cause the change in DNA nucleotide sequences. If a mutation occurs in germ cells then it can be passed from one generation to another

Conclusion

The physical position of a gene is called locus. Alternative form of a gene is called as alleles. These alleles are arising due to mutation.

How much ATP will be produced during the following metabolic scenario: Aerobic respiration of a 5mM lipid solution that is made up of one glycerol and an 8-carbon fatty acid and 12-carbon fatty acid. Recall that when glycerol breaks down to Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate it costs one ATP but your get an extra FADH2. Every two carbons of a fatty acid break down to one acetyl-CoA.  Units cannot be entered in this style of question but the units of your answer should be in mM of ATP.
If a bacterium using aerobic respiration was to degrade one small protein molecule into 8 molecules of pyruvic acid, how many ATP would that cell make? Assume there is no other carbon source.   Units cannot be entered in this style of question but the units of your answer should be in molecules of ATP.
If a bacterium using aerobic respiration was to degrade a 30 mM solution of citric acid, how many ATP would that cell make?  Assume no other carbon source is available.  Units cannot be entered in this style of question but the units of your answer should be in mM of ATP.
