Metals gets oxidized when they reacts with oxygen under ambient conditions. In ambient air there is presence of moisture which results in corrosion of material. Moisture in air reacts with metals and corrodes it in the presence of oxygen.

For a metal to prevent itself from corrosion and oxidation the metal must have a very stable electron configuration to prevent reaction with oxygen molecules. The metal also be placed in least reactive list in periodic table and must have chemically inert in nature.
