For complex shapes, realistic models cannot be obtained by geometric modeling or manual digitizing.

Examples of complex shapes are intricate plant structures such as trees, complex terrain such as mountain ranges, and gaseous substances such as clouds, smoke, or the flames of a fire.

For above complex shapes, polygonal meshes can be obtained by writing programs that construct the desired shape automatically. Such programs are collectively known as Procedural Models.

A procedural model is a program unit that applies an algorithm to generate a desired structure.
