Postsynaptic potential (PSP) is the binding of the neurotransmitters to the postsynaptic membrane of the neuron. Synaptic potentials can either depolarize or hyperpolarize the cell membrane receiving the signal.

Excitatory postsynaptic potential (EPSP) depolarizes the membrane potential in the cell membrane.

Inhibitory postsynaptic potential (IPSP) hyperpolarizes the membrane potential in the cell membrane.
