A pump, for which the characteristic curve is shown below, is used to pump water from a canal into a dam. The pump is mounted 2.0 m above the water level. There is a 50 mm PVC pipe connected to the suction side of the pump, and a 40 mm PVC pipe connected to the discharge side. The total length of pipe on the suction side is 8 m, and there is a strainer (K = 20), a non-return valve, a 90° elbow and a fully open gate ball valve in the suction line. Another fully open gate valve, and two 90° elbows are mounted in the discharge line. The total length of the discharge line is 60 m, and the discharge pipe outlet is 4 m above the pump. You may assume a water temperature of 25 °C. Determine:
(a) The flow rate through the system(b) The required fluid power(c) The efficiency of the pump(d) Whether the pump will cavitate or not.

A 100,000 kg engine is moving up a slope of gradient 5° at a
speed 100 m/s. The coefficient of friction between the engine
and the rails is 0,1. If the engine has an efficiency of 4 % for
converting that into work, find the amount of coal, the engine
has to burn up in one hour (Burning of 1 kg of coal yields
50,000 joules).

A duct of 0.45 m diameter and 90 m long leads from a fan discharge chamber where the pressure is 15 mm of water to a plenum chamber where the pressure is 10 mm of water. In order to increase the flow, two alternatives are considered. One is to lay a duct of 0.3 m diameter and 90 m long in parallel with the duct of 0.45 m diameter. The other is to increase the diameter of 0.45 m diameter duct for the last 60 m length. Calculate the increased diameter so that this method gives the same flow as the 0.45 m and 0.3 m ducts in parallel.
