Use the following information to answer the next three exercises. Neuroinvasive West Nile virus is a severe disease that affects a person’s nervous system . It is spread by the Culex species of mosquito. In the United States in 2010 there were 629 reported cases of neuroinvasive West Nile virus out of a total of 1,021 reported cases and there were 486 neuroinvasive reported cases out of a total of 712 cases reported in 2011. Is the 2011 proportion of neuroinvasive West Nile virus cases more than the 2010 proportion of neuroinvasive West Nile virus cases? Using a 1% level of significance, conduct an appropriate hypothesis test.
• “2011” subscript: 2011 group.
• “2010” subscript: 2010 group
This is:
a. a test of two proportions
b. a test of two independent means
c. a test of a single mean
d. a test of matched pairs.

- Cholesterol Cholesterol in human blood is necessary, but too much can lead to health problems. There are three main types of cholesterol: HDL (high-density lipoproteins), LDL (low-density lipoproteins), and VLDL (very low-density lipoproteins). HDL is considered “good” cholesterol; LDL and VLDL are considered “bad” cholesterol. A standard fasting cholesterol blood test measures total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. These numbers are used to estimate LDL and VLDL, which are difficult to measure directly. Your doctor recommends that your combined LDL/VLDL cholesterol level be less than 130 milligrams per deciliter, your HDL cholesterol level be at least 60 milligrams per deciliter, and your total cholesterol level be no more than 200 milligrams per deciliter. (a) Write a system of linear inequalities for the recommended cholesterol levels. Let x represent the HDL cholesterol level, and let y represent the combined LDL VLDL cholesterol level. (b) Graph the system of inequalities from part (a). Label any vertices of the solution region. (c) Is the following set of cholesterol levels within the recommendations? Explain. LDL/VLDL: 120 milligrams per deciliter HDL: 90 milligrams per deciliter Total: 210 milligrams per deciliter (d) Give an example of cholesterol levels in which the LDL/VLDL cholesterol level is too high but the HDL cholesterol level is acceptable. (e) Another recommendation is that the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol be less than 4 (that is, less than 4 to 1). Identify a point in the solution region from part (b) that meets this recommendation, and explain why it meets the recommendation.arrow_forwardSome people seem to believe that you can fix anything with duct tape. Even so, many were skeptical when researchers announced that duct tape may be a more effective and less painful alternative than liquid nitrogen, which doctors routinely use to freeze warts. An article described a study conducted at a medical center. Patients with warts were randomly assigned to either the duct tape treatment or the more traditional freezing treatment. Those in the duct tape group wore duct tape over the wart for 6 days, then removed the tape, soaked the area in water, and used an emery board to scrape the area. This process was repeated for a maximum of 2 months or until the wart was gone. Data consistent with values in the article are summarized in the following table. Number with Wart Treatment Successfully Removed Liquid nitrogen freezing 103 60 Duct Tape 100 88 A USE SALT Do these data suggest that freezing is less successful than duct tape in removing warts? In previous studies, dogs have been able to distinguish the smell of bladder cancer, lung cancer, and breast cancer. Now, it appears that a dog in Japan has been trained to smell bowel cancer.1 Researchers collected breath and stool samples from patients with bowel cancer as well as from healthy people. The dog was given five samples in each test, one from a patient with cancer and four from healthy volunteers. The dog correctly selected the cancer sample in 33 out of 36 breath tests and in 37 out of 38 stool tests.1‘‘Dog Detects Bowel Cancer,” CNN Health Online, January 31, 2011. (b) Round your answers to the following questions to one decimal place. What percentage of the breath samples did the dog get correct?%What percentage of the stool samples did the dog get correct?% (c) Of all the tests the dog got correct, what percentage…arrow_forward
