Breast Cancer Two drugs were tested to see whether they helped women who had breast cancer without lymph node involvement. The drugs are called TAC (docetaxel, doxorubicin, and cyclophosphamide) and FAC (fluorouracil, doxorubicin, and cyclophosphamide). About half of the 1060 women with breast cancer without lymph node involvement were randomly assigned to TAC, and the other half were assigned to FAC. After 77 months, 4473 out of 539 of the women assigned to TAC were alive, and 426 out of 521 women assigned to FAC were alive.
a. Find both sample percentages of survival, and compare them descriptively.
b. Was this a controlled experiment or an observational study? Explain why. From studies like these, can we conclude a cause-and-effect relationship between the drug type and the survival percentage? Why or why not?

- What is a sample space?arrow_forwardList the sample space of each experiment. Selecting a letter of the alphabetarrow_forwardA drug company developed a honey-based liquid medicine designed to calm a child's cough at night. To test the drug, 105 children who were ill with an upper respiratory tract infection were randomly selected to participate in a clinical trial. The children were randomly divided into three groups - one group was given a dosage of the honey drug, the second was given a dosage of liquid DM (an over-the-counter cough medicine), and the third (control group) received a liquid placebo (no dosage at all). After administering the medicine to their coughing child, parents rated their children's cough diagnosis as either better or worse. The results are shown in the table below: Diagnosis Treatment Better Worse Total Control 4 33 37 DM 12 21 33 Honey 24 11 35 Total 40 65 105 In order to determine whether the treatment group is independent of the coughing diagnosis, a two-way chi-square test was conducted. 1. State the alternative and the null hypothesis. 2. Calculate test statistic 3. Determine…arrow_forward
- Your employer asks you to test the effects of a new drug on high blood pressure. You decide to perform an experiment. 320 people ages 35-50 years old with high blood pressure agree to participate in your experiment. You divide them into equal groups according to age. Within each group, you then randomly select half of them to be in the treatment group and the other half in the control group. What type of experimental design are you using for this experiment?arrow_forwardCocaine addiction is very hard to break. Even among addicts trying hard to break the addiction, relapse is common. (A relapse is when a person trying to break out of the addiction fails and uses cocaine again.) A study is conducted to investigate the effectiveness of two drugs, desipramine and lithium, in the treatment of cocaine addiction. The subjects in the six-week study were cocaine addicts seeking treatment. The 72 subjects were randomly assigned to one of three groups (desipramine, lithium, or a placebo, with 24 subjects in each group) and the study was double-blind. Relapse No relapse Desipramine 10 14 Lithium 18 6 Placebo 20 4 1.We are interested in knowing whether there was a difference in the proportion of relapse between the two drugs. Write the null and alternative hypotheses that would help determine an answer to our research their question. (You are writing equations, not words.) A study was conducted on 245 children who had nonlethal scorpion stings. The ages of the children ranged from 6 months to 18 years old. Each child was randomly assigned to receive a shot of the anti-venom or a placebo shot. Researchers recorded whether or not their condition improved over the next four hours. They found that about 73% of the children who were given anti-venom saw an improvement in their condition whereas only about 23% of the children who were given the placebo saw an improvement in their condition. Identify the population. The population is all children 6 months to 18 years old with nonlethal scorpion stings. Identify the sample. The sample is 245 children 6 months to 18 years old with nonlethal scorpion stings. What is the treatment variable? The treatment variable is the anti-venom shot. What is the response (or outcome) variable? The outcome variable is improvements in their condition.…arrow_forward
- Individuals who have experienced a stroke are at an increased risk of having another stroke. Prevention is particularly important for high-risk populations. The Second European Stroke Prevention Study asked whether daily doses of an anti-blood- clotting agent, such as aspirin or dipyridamole, would help prevent strokes among patients who had just experienced a first stroke. Volunteer patients were randomly assigned to one of four treatment options: placebo, aspirin, Dipy., Both drugs. Researchers then recorded the patients who had another stroke and specifically if they died from that second stroke or not. What are the hypotheses to determine if there is there a relationship between treatment and death from second stroke? Ho: Treatment type and death from second stroke are independent from one another. Ha: Treatment type and death from second stroke are NOT independent from one another. Ho: Treatment type and death from second stroke are NOT independent from one another. She was also interested if age had an impact on birth weights. She randomly selected 27 pregnant mothers in the first trimester of whom 9 were 20 to 29 years old, 9 were 30 to 39 years old, and 9 were 40 or older. For each age group, she randomly assigned the mothers to one of three diets. After delivery, she measured the birth weight (in grams) of the babies and obtained the data a) What is the blocking variable?arrow_forward
