Calculate the approximate number of atoms in a bacterium. Assume that the average mass of an atom in the bacterium is ten times the mass of a hydrogen atom. (Hint: The mass of a hydrogen atom is on the order of 10-27 kg and the mass of a bacterium is on the order of 10-15 kg.)
Figure 1.28 This color-enhanced photo shows Salmonella typhimurium (red) attacking human cells. These bacteria are commonly known for causing foodborne illness. Can you estimate the number of atoms in each bacterium? (credit: Rocky Mountain Laboratories, NIAID, NIH)

- A scientist is working with 19 meters of gold wire. How long is the wire in millimeters? Be sure to include the correct unit in your answer.arrow_forwardTHE GREAT WALL OF CHINA IS APPROXIMATELY 21,196 KM LONG. IF A WALKING ROBOT WOULD WALK ACROSS IT AT THE RATE OF 10 KPH NON STOP, HOW MANY DAYS, HOURS, MINUTES AND SECONDS WOULD IT TAKE IT TO TRAVEL END TO END? ( Sample Ans: 3 days, 12 hrs, 36 mins and 15 s) 1 Add filearrow_forwardA light-year (ly) is the distance light travels in one year (at speed of 2.998 ×× 108 m/sm/s ). An astronomical unit (AU) is the average distance from the Sun to Earth, 1.50 ×× 108 km. 1 year = 3.156 ×× 107 s. How many meters are there in 1.70 ly? Express your answer using three significant figures. Express in scientific notation! 1.70 ly = _________________m How many AU are there in 1.70 ly light-year? Express your answer using three significant figures. Express in scientific notation! 1.70 ly = _________________AUarrow_forward
- The doctor finally figures out wha is wrong with you and prescribes a medicine that will return you to full health. The order is for 25 mg of the medicine. The nurse walks in with a liquid and you ask to see the bottle. The bottle says 100 mg of medicine per 15 ml of liquid. How many millilitiers should she give you? Would she need to bring that to you in a dropper, a little cup, a glass or a large bottle?arrow_forwardA pyramid has a square base of side x and height h. The volume V of the pyramid is given by the expression: V - x²h 3 If V is measured to 5% and h is measured to 3%, what is the percentage uncertainty of ? Remember to include the % symbol with your answer.arrow_forwardSo we take a pile of paper, we count the number of sheets, and obtain 226. Then, we measure how tall the pile is with a ruler: 24.0 mm. As discussed in section 1, we could have a long argument about how much exactly should the uncertainty of this measurement be. Let’s settle to ± 0.5 mmarrow_forward
- There is one base pair for every 0.34 nm of DNA, and the total contour length of all DNA in a single human cell is approximately 2 m. With this information, calculate the number of base pairs in a single cell. Assuming that there are 1014 cells in the human body, calculate the total length of DNA. How does this estimate compare to the distance from the Earth to the sun (149.6 × 106 km)?arrow_forwardHow many significant figures are in the number 0.00030100?arrow_forwardThe SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) virus can be described as approximately spherical having a diameter of about 120 nm. If the density is about the same as water, 1 000 kg/m*, determine the mass of one COVID-19 virus. Express your answer in picograms. Clearly show your calculations and unit conversions using the chain method.arrow_forward
- If the number of significant figures is 6, what is the value of the pre-specified Error(?s) Select one: O a 0.000005% O b. 0.0005% O c. 0.005% ০ d 0.00005%arrow_forwardSince 1 cubic cm= 1mL, then how many cubic cm are there in a liter?arrow_forwardThe measurement error is defined as AX=X-Xo.where Xo is the true value of a physical quantity. X is the measured value of the physical quantity, AX is also known as "absolute error" What is the correct understanding to absolute error? Select one: O a An absolute error indicates the absolute value of the error. Ob Absolute error is the difference between the measured value and the true value. O e Absolute error indicates that the error is always positive. Od. Absolute eror indicates that the magnitude of an error is certain.arrow_forward
