Explanation of Solution

Given:

The magnitude of vector A is 3.00 units and its direction is 30° above x -axis.

The magnitude of vector B is 2.00 units and its direction is 45° below − x -axis.

Formula Used:

The vector A is above positive x -axis; therefore, its component will be positive.

Write the expression for vector A.

  A=A(cosθAi^+sinθAj^) ...... (I)

Here, cosθAi^ is a horizontal component, sinθAj^ is a vertical component and θA is the angle of vector A with the positive x -axis.

The vector B is below the negative x -axis; therefore, its component will be negative.

Write the expression for vector B.

  B=B(cosθBi^+sinθBj^) ...... (II)

Here, cosθBi^ is a horizontal component, sinθBj^ is a vertical component and θB is the angle of vector B with the negative y -axis.

Write the expression for the sum of two vectors.

  S=A+B ...... (III)

Here, S is the sum of vectors.

Write the expression for the difference of two vectors.

  D=AB ...... (IV)

Calculation:

Substitute 3.00 units for A and 30° for θA in equation (I).

  A=(3.00 units)(cos30°i^+sin30°j^)=2.6i^+1.5j^

Substitute 2.00 units for B and 45° for θB in equation (II).

  B=(2.00 units)(cos45°i^+sin45°j^)=1.4i^1.4j^

Substitute 2.6i^+1.5j^ for A and 1.4i^1.4j^ for B in equation (III).

  S=2.6i^+1.5j^+(1.4i^1.4j^)=1.2i^+0.1j^

Substitute 2.6i^+1.5j^ for A and 1.4i1.4j for B in equation (III).

  D=2.6i^+1.5j^(1.4i^1.4j^)=4.0i^+2.9j^

Conclusion:

Thus, the value of A+B is 1.2i^+0.1j^ and the value of AB is 4.0i^+2.9j^ .

Paraxial design of a field flattener. Imagine your optical system has Petzal curvature of the field with radius p. In Module 1 of Course 1, a homework problem asked you to derive the paraxial focus shift along the axis when a slab of glass was inserted in a converging cone of rays. Find or re-derive that result, then use it to calculate the paraxial radius of curvature of a field flattener of refractive index n that will correct the observed Petzval. Assume that the side of the flattener facing the image plane is plano. What is the required radius of the plano-convex field flattener? (p written as rho )
