Concept explainers
In an experiment examining vitamin C as a cold treatment, students with cold symptoms who visited the campus medical center either received vitamin C or were treated with over-the-counter drugs. Students then reported on the length and severity of their colds. Both the students and the clinic health providers knew which treatment students were receiving. This study indicated that vitamin C significantly reduced the length and severity of colds. Which factors make this result somewhat unreliable?

- In 1993, Dr Knox Todd, an emergency physician on the medical staff of the UCLA Emergency Center in Los Angeles, reported study findings on a pain study. In the study, they looked at treatment given to all emergency department patients at UCLA between the ages of 15 and 55 over a two-year period for the treatment of an isolated long-bone fracture to arm or leg. They selected this injury because it is one of the most consistently painful. The patients had no other serious injuries. Given the community served, these patients were either Hispanic (31 patients) or White (108 patients). They found: - 17 of the 31 Hispanic patients (55%) received no medication for pain during treatment - 28 of the 108 White patients (26%) received no medication for pain during treatment Many professional colleagues criticized the study and suggested that different ethnic groups respond to pain differently. That Hispanic patients may be more stoic in the face of their injury, expressing fewer symptoms of pain…arrow_forwardI am working on the scientific method and am confused on what a controlled variable is and what controlled treatment is? I am also struggling to find the hypothesis to the following scenario: Esther became interested in insulating while her parents new house was being built. She decided to determine which insulation transfer the least heat. She filled each of five jars half full with water. She sealed each jar with a plastic lid. Then she wrapped each jar with a different kind of insulation. She put the jars outside in direct sunlight. Later, she measured the temperature of the water and Jar.arrow_forwardWhen researchers at the Best Southern University tested the Drug X (from a commercial source), it failed to lower blood cholesterol levels in mice. They emailed Dr. Meg A'Brain for some clarifications about the conditions of the Drug X administration; specifically, they wanted to know: Amount of Drug X administered Duration of administration Age, gender and number of mice Method of administration (mixed with food or in water, i.v. or i.p. injected) Dr. Meg A'Brain said, "Of course, please see attached publication from my lab" and attached the paper Dolt Colt & Meg A'Brain, Journal of Irreproducible Results (2018), 666, 1234-1240 Here is the information from the Methods section of the paper. Drug X was dissolved in DMSO and administered to male mice for 7 days. After 7 days, blood was withdrawn from the tail vein and cholesterol levels measured using a kit. The drug was administered for 7 days. What is this publication lacking? Question 4 options:…arrow_forward
- Various over-the-counter cold remedies control or inhibitinflammation and depress the symptoms of colds. Is this beneficialor not? Support your answer.arrow_forwardWhat is the result of damage to relative biological effectiveness?arrow_forwardA researcher is conducting an experiment testing whether a new pharmaceutical drug is able to effectively treat heartburn and has a physician assisting with the study involving volunteers who experience chronic heartburn. Which of the following descriptions most closely describes the control used in this study? Show answer choices The researcher has organized the patients into 4 groups, where patients either take 1 dose of the drug, 2 doses of the drug, 1 dose of the placebo, or 2 doses of the placebo. The physician asks patients to rate their heartburn discomfort on a scale from 1-10 every 5 minutes up to an hour. The physician and patients both do not know if they are receiving the actual drug or a placebo. The placebo pill contains just compressed sugar and no active drug. Patients are randomly selected and placed into the four categories.arrow_forward
- Describe how the following changes in experimental conditions would have affected the curve obtained in the log dose-occupancy curve.arrow_forwardIn double-blind studies neither the test subject or the researcher knows who was given the drug and who was given the control. Why are these studies effective for testing a drug that may elevate mood and relieve feelings of depression? Since there are two symptoms that are affected, a double-blind study is required. Double-blind studies are ways to ensure that only the researcher can figure out who is getting the effective drug. Double-blind studies are the most economical way to gather results from testing on humans. The patients and researchers are not given this information so they cannot be influenced in reporting the effectiveness.arrow_forwardWhich of the following examples will have longer lasting physiological responses to drug: Group of answer choices A.increase in heart rate following adrenaline infusion B.changes in gene product formation following corticosteroid injectionarrow_forward

The inventor and chief advocate of the products is Jim Humble. There is little evidence to support the fact that MMS does anything to patients aside from making them feel worse than they did before they tried it. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is typical in its conclusions about the so-called miracle drug. The FDA is typical in its conclusions about the so-called miracle drug. The FDA identifies it as 28 percent sodium chlorite, which , when mixed with an acid (as recommended), produces a potent form of bleach. The product’s labels suggest high oral doses for the minimum effect. The FDA states the oral doses will produce nothing but nausea, vomiting, dehydration, and diarrhea. Humble claims to have “treated” 100,000 patients in Mexico and other parts of the world. It is also clear that MMS has been used on pancreatic and lung cancer patients…arrow_forward
