Concept explainers
In an experiment examining vitamin C as a cold treatment, students with cold symptoms who visited the campus medical center either received vitamin C or were treated with over-the-counter drugs. Students then reported on the length and severity of their colds. Both the students and the clinic health providers knew which treatment students were receiving. This study indicated that vitamin C significantly reduced the length and severity of colds. Which factors make this result somewhat unreliable?

- Which of the following is part of the initial response to cold temperature? a. Panting b. Sweating C. Shunting of the blood to the core regions of the body d. Vasodilation of peripheral blood vessels e. Decreased metabolismarrow_forwardWhy do most cold remedies increase heart rate and blood pressure? a. These drugs block the sympathetic nervous system. b. These drugs block the parasympathetic nervous system. c. These drugs block the ventral roots of the spinal cord. d. These drugs block the dorsal roots of the spinal cord.arrow_forwardOne among the following statements is true regarding temperature regulation: A. Excess blankets or bed coverings interfere with heat loss through radiation and conduction. B. Wet bed linen or gowns promote with convection and conduction. C. Coverings interfere with heat conservation. D. All of the above ationale:arrow_forward
- Researchers have recently demonstrated that stressed people are more susceptible to contracting the common cold than people who are not stressed. What kind of stress must the infected patients be experiencing, and why does it make them more susceptible to the virus?arrow_forwardDescribe how the following changes in experimental conditions would have affected the curve obtained in the log dose-occupancy curve.arrow_forwardOutline the events that shows the negative feedback loop that happens when you (choose only one): get a wound, consume too much sugar, get hot by being in a humid place, feel cold, drink too much water, touch a hot surface, get pinched or pricked, or are in a poorly lit room. You are encouraged to do research on the mechanisms that enables the responses for these.arrow_forward
- Which of the following examples will have longer lasting physiological responses to drug: Group of answer choices A.increase in heart rate following adrenaline infusion B.changes in gene product formation following corticosteroid injectionarrow_forwardIn mammals, body temperature is controlled by a structure in the brain called the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is able to sense even slight variations in body temperature. This structure is responsible for bodily responses that include thirst, the activation of sweat glands, and the dilation of blood vessels near the skin. Each of these mechanisms works to restore body temperature to a normal range.arrow_forwardThe dose level of Drug XYZ is 60 mg/m2 (Hint: Use the table found in p.19 for the conversion factors)a. What is the dose in body weight (mg/kg) basis in dogs?b. What is the dose in body weight (mg/kg) basis in rats?c. What is the dose in body weight (mg/kg) basis in monkeys?d. - Which of the following statements best applies to the term adaptation? * A. Resistance increases as a result of exposure to prior stress B. Resistance decreases as a result of exposure to prior stress C. Genetically determined level of resistance acquired over generations D. Genetically determined level of resistance acquired in one generationarrow_forwardIn preparation for serious competitions, athletes train in high altitude conditions (about 2-3 km above sea level) for a month or more. During warm-ups, even in the warm season, athletes wear insulated suits (warm muscles). Extremely rarely are “violators” who additionally use a pharmacological preparation containing a hormone to enhance the physiological effect of training in the mountains. Questions: 1. What do training in highlands give? 2. Why do you need to warm up your muscles? 3. What hormone are we talking about, and what is its physiological significance? 4. What blood indicator can change with prolonged exposure to high mountains with a negative value for the body?arrow_forwardWhat is the best way to provide strong evidence that there is a causative relationship between two variables? A. Set up a number of experiments to ensure that the explanatory variable is truly the cause of the response variable. B. Use a bar graph to compare the means of the two variables. If they are close together, then they are related. C. Graph it on a scatterplot and find the R-squared value. If the R-squared value is close to 1.0, it proves the correlation. D. Graph it on a histogram and look for the mean of the data.arrow_forward
