Chapter 1, Problem 24SE

Aqua running has been suggested as a method of cardiovascular conditioning for injured athletes and others who desire a low-impact aerobics program. In a study to investigate the relationship between exercise cadence and heart rate,1 the heart rates of 20 healthy volunteers were measured at a cadence of 48 cycles per minute (a cycle consisted of two steps). The data are as follows:

Chapter 1, Problem 24SE, Aqua running has been suggested as a method of cardiovascular conditioning for injured athletes and

  1. a Use the range of the measurements to obtain an estimate of the standard deviation.
  2. b Construct a frequency histogram for the data. Use the histogram to retain a visual approximation to y ¯ and s.
  3. c Calculate y ¯ and s. Compare these results with the calculation checks provided by parts (a) and (b).
  4. d Construct the intervals y ¯ ± k s , , k = 1, 2, and 3, and count the number of measurements falling in each interval. Compare the fractions falling in the intervals with the fractions that you would expect according to the empirical rule.

Characterize (with proof) all connected graphs that contain no even cycles in terms oftheir blocks.
Let G be a connected graph that does not have P4 or C3 as an induced subgraph (i.e.,G is P4, C3 free). Prove that G is a complete bipartite graph
Prove sufficiency of the condition for a graph to be bipartite that is, prove that if G hasno odd cycles then G is bipartite as follows:Assume that the statement is false and that G is an edge minimal counterexample. That is, Gsatisfies the conditions and is not bipartite but G − e is bipartite for any edge e. (Note thatthis is essentially induction, just using different terminology.) What does minimality say aboutconnectivity of G? Can G − e be disconnected? Explain why if there is an edge between twovertices in the same part of a bipartition of G − e then there is an odd cycle
