Chapter 1, Problem 19P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The relative atomic mass of B-11 isotope of boron needs to be determined.

Concept Introduction: Isotope is defined as atoms of same element with same atomic number but different mass number.

The average atomic mass is calculated from percentage abundance and isotopic mass. If there are two isotopes of an atom, say A and B, the following formula is used to calculate the atomic mass of isotope.

  Atomic mass=%A×MA+%B×MB

Here, %A is percentage abundance of isotope-A, MA is isotopic mass of A, %B is percentage abundance of isotope-B and MB is isotopic mass of B.

The atomic masses of chlorine-35 (75.780%) and chlorine-37 (24.220%) are 34.969 amu and 36.966 amu, respectively. Calculate the average atomic mass of chlorine. The percentages in parentheses denote the relative abundances. Write the mass to correct significant figures followed by amu.
A hypothetical element exists as two isotopes: I = 85.50 amu and II = 88.70 amu. If the percent abundance of isotope I is (2.16x10^1)%, what would be the calculated atomic mass (in amu)? Enter your answer in scientific notation with 3 sig figs. Do not include any units in your answer. Do not round any intermediate calculations. Note: Your answer is assumed to be reduced to the highest power possible. Your Answer:
(1. On the second floor of Kent Laboratory a chemistry student in 111B finds that 15.20 g of nitrogen will react with 17.37 g, 34.74 g, or 43.43 g of oxygen to form three different compounds: (a) Calculate the ratio of the mass of oxygen to the mass of nitrogen for each compound and (b) Explain briefly how the numbers in part (a) support the atomic theory.
