Concept explainers
As a test of orienteering skills, your physics class holds a contest in a large, open field. Each contestant is told to travel 20.8 m due north from the starting point, then 38.0 m due cast, and finally 18.0 m in the direction 33.0° west of south. After the specified displacements, a contestant will find a silver dollar hidden under a rock. The winner is the person who takes the shortest time to reach the location of the silver dollar. Remembering what you learned in class, you run on a straight line from the starting point to the hidden coin. How far and in what direction do you run?

- In an attempt to escape a desert island, a castaway builds a raft and sets out to sea. The wind shifts a great deal during the day and he is blown along the following directions: 2.50 km and 45.0 north of west, then 4.70 km and 60.0 south of east, then 1.30 km and 25.0 south of west, then 5.10 km straight east, then 1.70 km and 5.00 east of north, then 7.20 km and 55.0 south of west, and finally 2.80 km and 10.0 north of east. Use a graphical method to find the castaway’s final position relative to the island.arrow_forwardFind the horizontal and vertical components of the 100-m displacement of a superhero who flies from the top of a tall building following the path shown in Figure P1.40. In what direction should he go? (Give the angle with respect to due cast.) (See Sections 3.2 and 3.3.)arrow_forward
- one day you go hiking at a nearby nature preserve. at first, you follow the straight, clearly marked trails. from your starting point, you travel 2.00 miles down the 1st trail. then you turn to your left by 30.0 degrees to follow a 2nd trail for 1.40 miles. next, you turn to your right by 160 degrees and follow a third trail for 1.90 miles. at this point you are getting very tired and would like to go back. you would like to take a shortcut directly through the woods. how far to your right should you turn, and how far do you have to walk, to go directly back to the darting point. what degree turn to the right must "I" take, and how many miles must I walk back? I know the distance is 2.104 miles, but I cannot figure out the degree angle.arrow_forwardA metro train starts from a terminal station. The train heads north for 475 m, then west for 165 m, then north for 410 m, then east for 650 m where it arrives at the next station. What is the magnitude of the displacement vector from the terminal station to the next station?arrow_forwardA spelunker is surveying a cave. She follows a passage 180 m straight west, then 210 m in adirection 45° east of south, and then 280 m at 30° east of north. After a fourth displacement, she finds herself back where she started. Use appropriate scale drawing to determine the magnitude and direction of the fourth displacement. What is the spelunker’s displacement?arrow_forward
- A Sledding Contest. You are in a sledding contest where you start at a height of 45.0 m above the bottom of a valley and slide down a hill that makes an angle of 25.0° with respect to the horizontal. When you reach the valley, you immediately climb a second hill that makes an angle of 15.0° with respect to the horizontal. The winner of the contest will be the contestant who travels the greatest distance up the second hill. You must now choose between using your flat-bottomed plastic sled, or your "Blade Runner," which glides on two steel rails. The hill you will ride down is covered with loose snow. However, the hill you will climb on the other side is a popular sledding hill, and is packed hard and is slick. The two sleds perform very differently on the two surfaces, the plastic one performing better on loose snow, and the Blade Runner doing better on hard-packed snow or ice. The performances of each sled can be quantified in terms of their respective coefficients of kinetic friction…arrow_forwardIn an attempt to escape a desert island, a castaway builds a raft and sets out to sea. At first, she follows the straight, clearly marked trails. From the trailhead, she travels 2.00 miles down the first trail. Then, she turns 30.0° to the left to follow a second trail for 1.60 miles. Next, she turns 160.0° to her right to follow a third trail for 1.70 miles. At this point, Sofia is getting very tired and would like to get back as quickly as possible, but all of the available trails seem to lead her deeper into the woods. She would like to take a shortcut directly through the woods (ignoring the trails). What distance dsc does she have to walk to take a shortcut directly back to her starting point? Through what angle Osc should she turn to the right in order to take the shortcut directly back to her starting point? dsc= 0sc = milesarrow_forward
