Chapter 1, Problem 1.38ACA
Monitoring the production of soft-drink cans. The Wakefield plant of Coca-Cola and Schweppes Beverages Limited (CCSB) can produce 4,000 cans of soft drink per minute. The automated process consists of measuring and dispensing the raw ingredients into storage vessels to create the syrup, and then injecting the syrup, along with carbon dioxide, into the beverage cans. In order to monitor the subprocess that adds carbon dioxide to the cans, five filled cans are pulled off the line every 15 minutes, and the amount of carbon dioxide in each of these five cans is measured to determine whether the amounts are within prescribed limits.
- a. Describe the process studied.
- b. Describe the variable of interest.
- c. Describe the sample.
- d. Describe the inference of interest.
- e. Brix is a unit for measuring sugar concentration. If a technician is assigned the task of estimating the average brix level of all 240,000 cans of beverage stored in a warehouse near Wakefield, will the technician be examining a process or a population? Explain.

A plant is introducing time standards in one of its production departments. The department employs 96 workers. The average wage rate in
the department is $13/hr, including fringe benefits. The workweek is 40 hr (2000 hr/yr). The average number of batches produced each
year by a worker is 50 (1 batch/week), and the average batch size is 1196 parts. When time standards are used, the productivity increase
is expected to be 18%. The application speed ratio of the work measurement techniques to be used is 150. The annual salary of each
analyst is $51.5,000, including fringe benefits.
Determine the annual savings in direct labor cost if the department's workload after standards are introduced is the same as before,
meaning that fewer workers will be required.

A city of 70000 residents has an average water demand of 250 L/ca.day. The institutional and commercial, and industrial average areas in the city are 250 and 350 Ha, and water demand expected is 20 and 23 m3 /Ha.d. The public water use and water unaccounted for are 10 and 6 % of total municipal water demand, respectively. Calculate total municipal demand and each component quantity as a % of total municipal demand.
Rivers in North Carolina contain small concentrations of mercury that can accumulate in fish over their lifetimes. The concentration of mercury in fish tissue can be obtained by catching fish and sending samples to a lab for analysis. A study was conducted on fish from the Waccamaw and Lumber Rivers to investigate mercury levels in tissues of largemouth bass. At several stations along each river a group of fish were caught, weighed and measured; in addition a filet from each fish was sent to a lab so that the tissue concentration of mercury could be determined. In all, 171 fish were caught at 15 different research stations along the Waccamaw and Lumber Rivers. Data from fish caught at one of these stations is shown in the following table:

- Special dyes have been developed that only bind to DNA. The intensity of the color is directly related to the quantity of DNA present in the cell. A haploid cell would have a “low” amount of color, a cell in G1 would have a “medium” amount of color, and a cell in M phase would have a “high” amount of color.
