Chapter 1, Problem 1.31NP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: For the mixture of oxygen and hydrogen gas, the total pressure is 1.65 atm. The pressure of hydrogen gas remaining after the removal of water due to ignition is 0.190 atm. The original composition of the mixture needs to be determined in terms of mole percent of the values of T and V are same.

Concept Introduction: The ideal gas equation is the equation which gives the relations between P, V, n and T of gases. It can be written as:

  P×V = n×R×T

Here, P is pressure, V is volume, n is number of moles, R is Universal gas constant and T is temperature.

Mole fraction of any component in the mixture can be calculated by taking ratio of the number of moles that component to the total number of moles in the mixture.

  XA=nAntotal

Here, nA is number of moles of component A and ntotal is total number of moles of mixture.
