Chapter 1, Problem 1.11NP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:The pressure exerted by 2.25 moles of H2 with volume 1.65 L at 298 K needs to be determined using the Vander Waals equation of the state and ideal gas equation. Whether the gas is in the repulsive or attractive region of the molecule-molecule potential needs to be determined.

Concept Introduction: The ideal gas equation is the equation which gives the relations between P,V, n and T of gases. It can be written as:

  PV = nRT

Here, P is pressure, V is volume, n is number of moles, R is Universal gas constant and T is temperature. Usually gases do not follow ideal behavior under all conditions of pressure, temperature and volumes. The relation of P, V, n and T of real gases can be given by Vander Waals equation as follows:

  (P + n2aV2) (V- n b) = nRT

Hence P = nRT V-nb - n2aV2
