The component of mixture can be separated using extraction. so we use a separating funnel into which two immiscible  solvents are added and the solvent which is heavier will be at bottom

the separation depends on the solubility on the component present in mixture with respect to the solvent

because "like solvent dissolves like."

organic solvent are non polar so non polar component will go to that layer while polar component prefer water as the solvent
