You are asked to design a concrete mixture. Concrete mix design should consider the following below; 1. The 28-day target strength should be 30 MPa. 2. Concrete will be used for a deck of a residential building at Tynemouth, Newcastle upon Tyne, England. 3. Deck is composed of 3 cm reinforcement and there is no need for piers. Hint: Decks that need piers or footings must have them installed below the frost line. This will keep the piers from heaving up out of the ground from the strength of the freeze.

You are asked to design a concrete mixture. Concrete mix design should consider the following below;
1. The 28-day target strength should be 30 MPa.
2. Concrete will be used for a deck of a residential building at Tynemouth, Newcastle upon Tyne,
England.
3. Deck is composed of 3 cm reinforcement and there is no need for piers.
Hint: Decks that need piers or footings must have them installed below the frost line. This will keep
the piers from heaving up out of the ground from the strength of the freeze.
4. (a) Use mixture design charts (same charts used in CE208 Materials of Construction
course),
(b) Please assume appropriate necessary mixture design parameters or values for the missing
ones in order to attain the required target strength. SHOW ALL YOUR ASSUMPTION AND
VALUES CLEARLY.
5. (a) Use ACI Method of mix design,
(b) Use BS Method (BRE) of mix design.
6. Determine the overall cost of both methods
7. Assume that 30% GGBS and 20% fly ash is to be used as a replacement to Portland cement
in your design. Make necessary arrangements and calculations as suggested by the method of
selection.
8. Provide a brief conclusion about sustainability based on the results obtained in step 7 above.
Briefly, discuss the effect of using GGBS and fly ash on economic (cost) and environmental
(carbon dioxide (CO2 emissions)) sustainability.
