You are a new grad assigned to work on the surgical unit of your local hospital. During your first week, however, you hear many complaints about the unit’s nurse manager. The staff is complaining that she makes decision about things that affect them without asking for their input. They say their opinion about things just does not matter. You hear a lot of frustration in the break room and that the staff dislikes the manager and does not respect her. They avoid her and often defy her directives. Leadership refers to the ability of an individual to influence and inspire their followers. A leader guides their followers and maximizes their efficiency of the followers. In leadership, the role of the leader is to provide clear direction to their followers and motivate them to accomplish the task efficiently and effectively. It is the art of influencing and motivating people to achieve goals and objectives. A leader has the authority and power to influence their followers and get them together to reach a common goal.A leader has to adopt different leadership styles according to the situation. The behaviour of the leader is reflected through their leadership style. 1) In the given case scenario, there are a lot of complaints regarding the unit's nurse manager. The staff complains that the manager makes a decision without asking for their input. The staff's opinion does not matter to the manager. The staff does not respect the manager and dislikes her. Therefore, from the case facts, it is evident that the leadership of the nurse manager is Autocratic/Authoritative. Autocratic leaders make decisions based on their ideas and judgement with little or no input from team members. Such leaders have full control over team members. There is no room for employee perspective due to which they feel demotivated in the assigned tasks. The creative ideas and perspectives of the team members are not welcomed when the team leader is authoritative. The authoritative leaders prioritize their own ideas and perspectives. 2) When the leader is autocratic it gets difficult for the members to work under that leader. The individuals under such leadership feel demotivated. In order to work comfortably in such an environment, individuals must listen to the leader and follow their instructions to avoid the conflicting situation. Autocratic leaders have the power to make decisions therefore, individuals need to act upon what the leader says or commands.
