Why is hypnosis controversial

Expert Solution
Hypnosis

Hypnosis is a controversial topic in psychology. Although it has been used to treat a variety of mental disorders and conditions, there are also many people who feel that hypnosis is just a form of brainwashing or mind control.

To understand why hypnosis is controversial, you need to understand how it works. Hypnosis involves two stages: induction and post-hypnotic suggestion. Induction involves putting someone into a state of deep relaxation by using relaxation techniques or muscle relaxation exercises. During this stage, the person is able to be more open to suggestion than during normal waking consciousness. Post-hypnotic suggestion involves giving the person suggestions about what he or she will do when he or she wakes up from the trance state. The subject may not remember anything while they are in this state, but they can still make decisions based on what they have been told while they were in hypnosis.
