We know that testing ourselves is an effective study technique. But can testing yourself before you learn new material be helpful too? Sana and colleagues hypothesised that a pre-test would
help participants focus on relevant information during the lesson and improve learning. To test the hypothesis, they randomly assigned participants to two groups. All participants did an
online statistics lesson in which they read about different experiments and learned which statistical test should be used in each case. Before the lesson, participants in the pre-test group did
a pre-test of the statistical concepts to be taught - they were told that they might not know the answers, but that they should try anyway. In the math group, participants did an easy pre-test
of basic math concepts that they already knew and that were not relevant to the new concepts. After the lesson, participants did a test on the new statistical concepts they had learned from
the examples (note - this test was different to the statistics pre-test, but tested similar concepts). Test scores (out of 100) were compared in an independent t-test.

A variable is anything that varies and is measurable. In experimental research design, there are two types of variables, the Independent variable, and the Dependent variable. The Independent variable is the one that the researcher manipulates and it is also the "cause" whereas the dependent variable is the "effect". There is also a third type of variable called the extraneous variable, those are the ones that can't be controlled by the researcher.
