Question

Why is a high HDL:LDL ratio healthier than a high LDL:HDL ratio?

Expert Solution
Step 1

A fat-like waxy substance that is utilized by the body to synthesize vitamins and hormones is called cholesterol. Cholesterol that moves through your body while inside lipoproteins is broadly divided into two types: Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and High-density lipoprotein (HDL).

Step 2

HDL is considered 'good cholesterol' because it functions to transport cholesterol to the liver for its expulsion from the body. The removal of excess cholesterol helps to decrease the chances of cholesterol entering and blocking the arteries. LDL is considered as 'bad cholesterol because it takes the cholesterol to the arteries, where its accumulation causes arterial blockage. Excess cholesterol can result in plaque buildup, called atherosclerosis. Therefore, a higher amount of HDL and low amount of LDL in the body is considered healthier
