Question

Why does Distinct blocks and wedges of soil may become separated from the adjoining earth?

Expert Solution
Step 1 Concept of distinct blocks and wedges of soils:

An earth slope or soil slope is an inclined surface of soil mass. This slope can be either natural or man-made. Since soil is resting on inclined surface. Therefore, failure can occur. There are different types of failures and wedge and block failure is one of them.

Reasons for distinct blocks and wedges of soils may become separated from the adjoining earth:

Distinct blocks and wedges may sometimes become separated from the adjoining earth in the slope of soil because a wedges of soil or blocks are formed which generates a failure plane that is inclined. The separation from the adjoining earth mostly happens when there are fissures, joints or weak soil layers in the slope or there is no proper drainage in slope and cracks occurs or sometimes may be when a slope is made up of two different materials. Separation mostly occurs parallel to the slope surface and it occurs in both the finite and infinite slopes of soil.
